Last week we were invited to the launch party of MGD Design Lab and Jeff Staple’s newest joint venture – the One of None collection.
The collaboration draws inspiration from Jeff’s roots as one of the originators of streetwear in New York City. Jeff took a leap of faith when entering the industry, being one of the only individuals who saw a future in streetwear fashion. Being that he had nothing to base his ventures off of, he had no one, and nothing to compare to. He wasn’t just a one-of-one, he was a one-of-none. Jeff sought out to find other creators who were also a “one-of-none” in their own right, and Toronto’s very own Ellie was selected as the artist who’s work would be featured on Jeff’s cut-and-sew deigns.
The catalogue features a range of pieces that were hand designed by Jeff Staple, including an anorak half-zip jacket, pull-over hoodie, long-sleeve crewneck sweater, and a pair of joggers. The collection is rounded out by a few dope accessories – a branded bottle opener in the shape of Staple brand’s iconic pigeon, and a printed cotton bandana with a gorgeous silk screen designed by Jeff. The collection is available only at Exclucity in very limited quantities, so don’t sleep!
We were lucky enough to get our hands on the anorak, bottle opener, and bandana, and form the moment you get these pieces in hand, it is clear that quality was their number one priority. The anorak boasts a completely waterproofed canvas, set off by embroidered branding on the sleeve, a polyester-lined hood, and on the back is a massive silk screen photo series shot by Ellie. The oversized compartmentalized kangaroo pocket offers both top and side entry points, perfect to store your phone, wallet, camera, and the kitchen sink.
The event itself was a celebration of the launch of this very unique collaborative partnership, but after the Golden State Warriors forced a Game 6 in the NBA Finals, it was quickly adjusted to accommodate a viewing party for the game. Prior to that, though, the crowd was treated to a panel discussion between the two creators who brought this project to life – Jeff Staple and Ellie. We learned about both innovator’s humble beginnings, and how they hustled and grinded to become the self-made entrepreneurs they are today.
Of course, because the event coincided with THE game, MGD played host to history as the crowd cheered and chanted their way through the game and toward a Raptor’s victory. In all honesty, we couldn’t have asked for a better way to watch the game ; among like-minded individuals, with so much common passion in one room – basketball and otherwise.
One closing remark; it cannot be understated how humble Jeff was, and the willingness to interact with the crowd and attendees was quite impressive. It was a pleasure meeting the man, myth, and legend, and it was a privilege to get my shoes signed by the man who designed them. Big ups to MDG Canada for facilitating what was, for many reasons, one of the most memorable nights of my life.
