Last week we were lucky enough to receive a very special care package from our good friends over a Converse that contained some kicks from their collaboration with Compton-born rapper, Vince Staples. The sneaker pays tribute to his brand new album, Big Fish Theory, and came in both a Chuck 70 Low, and a Chuck 70 High iteration. Vince is a close friend and colleague of Converse poster-boy, Tyler the Creator, so it is cool that they have both been given the green light on some really cool collaborative sneaker as of late.

The Chuck 70 is very similar to a regular Converse All Star, but has a very distinct vintage look and feel. The sole is thicker and generally glossy, with a patina that makes them look aged. This Vince Staples edition adds to that retro aesthetic with exposed stitching along the edges of the tongue, and along the side panels of the canvas upper.

The details on this pair are what really makes them special. Aside from the obvious – which is Vince Staples’ massive ‘Big Fish’ graphic found underneath the translucent outsole – there are a handful of other neat easter eggs scattered throughout the sneaker.

At the base of the tongue, you can find the words “BIG FISH” tucked under the flaps of canvas which house the eyelets. At the rear, “SEA”  is printed in a raised, tonal orange along the heel stay, and overlapping on to the midsole – which is an effect that I love to see.

On the interior of the shoe, you have a jersey-type tag on the tongue that reads “PLAYERS NAME: VINCE” in a handwritten font;  it’s another cool touch that gives the shoes a super vintage feel (it’s like when we were kids!). The final touch, keeping with the fishy theme, is the insole art. They are both covered in those little rocks you put at the bottom of a fish tank! Definitely a cool little touch that is a nice way to round out an awesome sneaker.

Thanks again to Converse for this care package, and here’s hoping that we see more from this collaborative duo in the future!
