In 2012 Nike dropped their very first #BeTrue line. In an effort to connect with the LGBTQ community, Nike released a few styles through NikeID in celebration of Pride Month. A small release of product hit only three stores in the United States that year as well. Fulfilling their mission of equality in sport, Nike set out to take initiative and bring #BeTrue to the masses.
Five years later, Nike is set to drop one of the sickest #BeTrue lines I’ve seen in a while. Tomorrow, June 1st, Nike’s newest Be True collection will release. Rainbows have been perfectly placed on some beloved footwear silhouettes, led by the VaporMax Flyknit.
Let’s not forget about the apparel in the collection. I’m quite stoked to rock a tank top with a rainbow alicorn (winged unicorn) on it. I want all the things. Socks too!
If you couldn’t tell yet, Nike’s #BeTrue line means a lot more to me than just a collection of footwear and apparel being released by my favourite brand. It’s not hype. It’s not “cool” to me. But it’s what the words “Be True” mean to me. I thoroughly believe in being your truest self. Whether that’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, straight, whatever. A few of my closest friends are part of the LGBTQ community and I’m proud to not only support them, but everyone. It’s exciting to know that we live in a world that’s a bit more accepting of those that choose to love whoever they choose to love.
However, there’s still a lot of work to do. Discrimination and hate towards LGBTQ still exists. I’ll be the first to admit that years ago I was openly homophobic. But since then, I’ve learned so much. I’ve learned that you can love absolutely anyone and everyone. Man or woman. It’s entirely okay to love those of any sex; same or not. I’m whole-heartedly proud to support being your truest self, regardless of who that is. And if rocking a rainbow everywhere on my body shows it, then you bet your ass I will!
I just want to remind you all to stay open-minded, and more importantly open-hearted. We’re all humans. We all have one life. We all have hearts. In sport there is no sexuality. In colour there is no gender. In love there is only love. #BeTrue.
